Full Review
So I was recently shopping for a bed. Why? Because my sofabed, that I used due to the tiny apartment I lived in, had become too uncomfortable to sleep in. Now, I was looking for a King Size bed where I could finally roll around freely, and not have my feet dangle off.
I visited a number of stores in the DC/VA area including Sleepy's and Mattress Warehouse. Interestingly enough, the Sleepy's sales agent told me that Sleepy's had bought up 1800mattress, where I previously bought my bed. Sleepy's it seemed had a monopoly on things, and therefore I visited their competitor Mattress Warehouse. Still, while both had some good beds, they all seemed overpriced. I had previously owned a King Sized bed and paid no more than $1000 for it, here they seemed to want $1500 at least for a decent one. They did have stuff below a $1000, but those mattresses seemed to be frames with a few springs and some crappy stuffing.
So after getting tired of being pushed around by the sales people and told that there was nothing cheaper, I went online and started looking. The one thing I did learn was that a foam mattress was the way to go, since it did not sag, and would last a long time. While browsing through the web, I found Overnightmattress.com. This site and another offered beds comparable to TempurPedic, though at a fraction of the cost.
The other site (I'm sorry I cant remember it's name), did not allow you to return the mattress if you had a problem (thus no trial period), however Overnight Mattress gave you a generous 120 day trial period. So I decided to give it a shot. After looking up reviews on their site and on the web, I found that the Pure Bliss Bamboo Memory Foam Mattress by Overnight Mattress (yeah it's a mouthfull) was the best choice. I wanted something soft but not too soft where I sink in completely. I am a side sleeper so that was another consideration.
About $1,300 dollars later, I received my bed frame and mattress.
Bed Frame
The bed frame came in a box taller than me, and so after lugging it up I started assembling it. The frame is completely made of wood, and assembles easily, though it is kind of messy with wood chips sometimes falling out. You also get the impression that the $299 they charged you is overpriced, and the frame itself is probably only worth $150, if that much. That said, the biggest problem I had with the bed frame was the fact that the ribs of the bed (see the picture) were only held together by the cover sheet, so moving the frame essentially would mean dismantling the whole thing.
Mattress
This was my first foam mattress. I had tried a few out at Sleepy's and Overnight Mattress, so I knew what to expect. Foam does not let you sink in completely like a regular mattress, neither is it ever going to be so plush. Foam surrounds the body and to some extent you do sink in, but you'd never want to wake up sucked into the middle of the mattress, would you?
So the mattress came in a box, which weight 110 lbs. After dragging it upstairs I started carefully cutting the box open, and then undid the airtight seal around the mattress. The mattress then expanded out in a nearly uncontrolled fashion, and then I realized that I had it turned upside down. Now turning around a 110 lb mattress is no easy feat, still after a while I had it turned around and was finally ready for bed.
Sleeping on It
The mattress feels soft to the touch, but once you lay down on it you realize it is not that soft. You definitely do not get that cloud like feeling you get from sleeping on a regular plush bed. That said the bed took on my shape little by little, but kept me from sinking in. I also did have a very good night's sleep. To date I have slept on the bed for a week or so, and it has been quite good. I would not exactly say it is worth $1,300, but nevertheless it feels good.
